How does this affect me?

Take a look at your family. Did someone die early?  Did someone leave somebody?  Did someone commit a crime or suicide or suffer in some terrible way? We now know that the effects of these traumas linger… and somehow we’re born into them. They forge a blueprint for our life, and can even pass onto our children.

Scientists in the fields of Epigenetics, Cellular Biology and Neurobiology are now attempting to explain these recurrences. All we know for sure is that unresolved family traumas, some going back two or three generations, can ensnare us in feelings and situations that don’t even belong to us.

The emotional history you share with your family began even before you were conceived. When your grandmother was five months pregnant with your mother, the egg that will eventually become you was already present in your mother’s womb. That means you, your mother and your grandmother all shared the same biological environment. Whatever your grandmother experienced—
her traumas, her sadness, her grief—can become your emotional inheritance.
